<p><strong>Wheat Ridge Police Chief Dan Brennan </strong>spoke at our January 12th meeting about the backpack food program he is involved with to help feed low income students at Pennington Elementary. Each student/family who signs up to participate in the program will receive food to feed the family over the weekend.  The students in need are identified by school officials. The police department, Wheat Ridge Optimists, and Wheat Ridge Rotary are joining forces to bring this popular area program to Pennington students before launching it in the other 3 schools.  Food distribution is coordinated through the Arvada Food Bank and will be brought to the school on a weekly basis by volunteers from the community.  We are asking businesses to help in one of two ways:  donate money for the program or volunteer.  Several E WR members have already donated money or offered to volunteer.  If you would like to participate.  Please contact Loretta lorettadschwankl@comcast.net</p>

These 3 winners shopped and spent at least 5.00, 8 times in Wheat Ridge between Nov 1 and Dec 31.  Many thanks for the generous donations of items and gift certificates for products and services that went into the prize bags.  This was our initial attempt at promoting Shopping Wheat Ridge First.  Thanks to all who participated.  We will definitely be gearing up for a Back To School version of this near mid summer (and repeat the holiday program in Dec. 2010.)</p>

<p><strong>WR2020 will be offering its fourth Planning and Development Academy</strong> starting in February.  The academy is open to Wheat Ridge residents and business owners and strives to give students an overview of the city planning and development processes.  There is no charge to participate, though donations are welcomed.</p>
<p>The academy consists of four classes and a field trip.  Since the curriculum is progressive we ask that students commit to attending 4 of the 5 sessions to graduate.  Graduation is held at a City Council meeting. Class dates are Tuesday evenings (2/2, 2/16, 3/2, 3/16, the field trip date will be set by the class) and will be held at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center on Kipling.  Dinner starts at 5:30 pm, classes run from 6-9 pm.</p>
<p>Topics covered include:  Inner Ring Suburbs, Residential and Retail Markets, City Planning Fundamentals, Legal Issues in City Planning, Urban Design/Sustainable Development and How Deals are Done: The Development Process from the Developer&#8217;s Perspective.  Questions:  Denise Balkas, <a href="http://www.wheatridge2020.org" target="_blank">wheatridge2020.org</a> or 720-259-1030.  Deadline for class registration is January 15th.</p>

<p>Wheat Ridge&#8217;s annual Pumpkin Glow will take place on Friday, Oct 30. 6:30-8 p.m.  The free event takes place at the Wheat Ridge Senior/Community Center, 6363 W. 35th Ave.  All ages are invited.  Jack-0-lanterns, refreshments, prizes.  They are asking for carved pumpkins.  If you want to donate one, please drop it by the Center on Oct 28 or 29 between 8 and 4 p.m. or by noon on Friday, Oct 30. <p>Join our &#8220;Business Education Series Team&#8221; on Monday, November 5th from 7:30 &#8211; 9 a.m. for a seminar on business financial concerns.  The Jefferson County Workforce Center will also have the e-Train Mobile Training Lab outside the seminar to demonstrate to employers the valuable career building services the lab offers.</p>
<p>Topics to be covered are: Business finance lender expectations, why there is no such thing as free money, tax credit, incentive and efficiency programs, ways to save money in your business every day, and financial and other services that are available.   The event will be in the Training Room at the Public Safety Center at 445 S. Allison Parkway.   Please bring an ID to be able to enter the building.</p>

<p><strong>Wheat Ridge Worksite Wellness Coalition</strong></p>
<p>LiveWell Wheat Ridge (LWWR) is a partnership of community stakeholders to create an environment and culture which supports healthy eating and active living (HEAL) to the negative impacts of adult and childhood obesity.  We accomplish this through supporting programs, policies and changes to the physical environment and infrastructure in Wheat Ridge.</p>
<p>LWWR seeks to develop a Wheat Ridge Worksite Wellness Coalition. This coalition will partner with large and small Wheat Ridge businesses to implement work site wellness capacity-building opportunities provide grants to small and large businesses to implement worksite wellness strategies, and provide a forum for employers to discuss best practices, current resources and program updates.
